Coronado
The Crown City
Coronado runs on tourism, hospitality, and a tight-knit local economy, with a steady stream of visitors and a military community layered on top. Restaurants, boutique hotels, retail shops, and real estate here live and die by how they show up on Google Maps and in the searches visitors run before they cross the bridge. We build the local search presence, photography, and brand that turn Coronado's foot traffic and out-of-town interest into booked tables, filled rooms, and repeat customers.
The local knowledge behind the work
History of Coronado
Coronado, California, known as the “Crown City,” was built to be a luxury resort from the start. In 1885 Elisha Spurr Babcock, Jr., Hampton L. Story, and their partners bought the undeveloped peninsula for a substantial sum at the time and set out to turn it into a resort community. The Coronado Beach Company, which they established, launched a large development project to bring residents and tourists to the peninsula.
In 1887, the founders launched an ambitious plan to create the ultimate resort destination. They constructed the Coronado Railroad to connect the peninsula directly to San Diego, enhancing accessibility and boosting the area’s appeal. The railroad made it easy to move both building materials and visitors, and the city grew because of it.
After the connection to San Diego was established the construction of the Hotel del Coronado began in 1888. Designed as a luxury resort, the hotel was one of the largest in the world at the time.
Its Victorian architecture drew a wealthy clientele, including celebrities, presidents, and royalty from around the world. The hotel not only boosted Coronado’s early economy but also established its long-standing reputation as a premier vacation destination.
John D. Spreckels furthered the development of Coronado after the initial establishment. He invested heavily in the city, and developed the Coronado Ferry Company and San Diego Electric Railway. Spreckels’ influence greatly expanded the city’s accessibility and connectivity to San Diego, fostering growth in both tourism and local residency. Located in the heart of Coronado, John D. Spreckels is memorialized at Spreckels Park, which continues to be a vibrant community gathering place hosting many public events and celebrations.
The early 20th century saw Coronado evolve with the establishment of significant military installations, including the North Island Naval Air Station in 1917. The base cemented the city’s strategic importance and brought a more diverse population to the area.
